think outside the bog box!
From the PC to the printer
You click the “Print” button, and your document or photo prints a few minutes later. So, what happens during the steps in between? Your computer creates an image of your document and sends data to the printer through a series of dots. Much like the pixels on your monitor, your printer places dots on a page in an arrangement that makes sense.
What actually happens when you hear all of those noises?
You send the document to the printer and immediately, you hear a series of grinding and mechanical noises. So, what is actually happening? While the printing information is sent to the printer, the printer itself if preparing for the physical work. This includes cleaning the print heads and making sure that the paper path is clear.
Once the information is in the printer’s hands, its roller guides the sheet of paper into the print area. The print head controls the release of ink onto the paper. It moves back and forth along a belt. The print head sprays dots of color on the paper, creating the printed document.
How do the dots work?
Color inkjet printers mimic the four-color printing process used by commercial printers. Depending on the manufacturer, the four colors– black, cyan (blue), magenta (red) and yellow–are housed in one cartridge or four individual cartridges. HP printers typically have a black cartridge and a three-ink cartridge, housing the cyan, magenta and yellow.
The print head sprays the dots in a specific order and with a specific concentration in order to create secondary colors or shades of a color. The printer software sends signals to the printer and print head, triggering the order and release of ink.
The result of this arrangement of dots is your document.
