We’ve had several customers ask us what the difference is between digital printing and offset printing and which they should choose and why. We have put together a great short overview of the 2 types of printing.
Offset Printing
The press is a process where print plates are created (one for each colour) and ink is rolled on and is absorbed into paper. This process offers the most accurate control of color, variation of color and paper weight.
Pros
➢Wide range of color re-production. Bright florescence, Pantones, ➢metallics, foils and varnishes can be produced
➢Most accurate color re-production and consistency
➢A wide variety paper weights, size and textures can be used
➢Better quality inks
➢Large print runs can be reproduced and extremely quickly
Cons
➢A lot more production steps are required
➢Low print quantities can be more expensive
➢You can not just print out one copy
➢Drying time is considerable
➢Requires trained professional to operate the press
➢A lot more attention to detail is required to ensure end quality
Digital Printing
Digital printing is the process of 4 colours CMYK and ink is dried onto paper by a fusier. This process offers a fast convenient method to print full colour.
Here is a short list of pros and cons to Digital Printing below:
Pros
➢Short turn around time, quick, no drying time required
➢Cost effective solution for small print runs under 500 copies
➢Can be printed onto a variety of paper sizes and othe mediums
➢Ability to print just one copy
➢There are digital printers everywhere
➢Does not require a formal quote from a print representative
Cons
➢Color consistency is poor in comparison
➢Larger quantities can be more expensive
➢Cannot reproduce Pantone colors 100% accurately
➢Weight of paper is limited and size of paper in most cases
➢Final results are limited to a semi-gloss or gloss finish
➢Ink does not absorb into paper; it sits on top of paper
We hope we were able to shed a little on the differences between offset printing and digital printing.
